If you are looking for an apartment or hotel for your next stay, you may be deciding on what type of hotel to go for, a standard chain hotel or a more individual boutique hotel. There are pros and cons to both types which I have outlined below.

A chain hotel is usually less atmospheric, but if you have stayed in the chain before, you are likely to know what level of service and facilities you can expect to receive. Some of the chain hotels also represent very good value for money and if you have a loyalty card you can earn points towards your next stay.

A boutique hotel is smaller and usually offers a much more personal service but it is more of an unknown entity. You might have a fantastic time or you might be disappointed, there is nothing to measure it by. They are usually far more atmospheric and the decor is usually more stylish than that of a chain hotel. (more...)

Many people like to try different hotels in different cities and may go for the most expensive one they can afford – or the cheapest they can find - but there are certain criteria to choosing a hotel or apartment which I firmly believe are vital to making the right choice.

Whether it is apartment rentals Amsterdam or a hotel in Moscow, location is the key. I must admit that I am not fond of public transport and taxis are so expensive that I always try to find a hotel which is within easy walking distance of wherever I want to be, whether it is a business meeting or a tourist attraction.

I also try to find a hotel within easy walking distance of a supermarket as I find it so much easier to be able to buy a snack there instead of eating out in a restaurant, especially if I am on my own. (more...)

My favourite destination of the moment has to be Beirut, which has made it to the top of many travel lists this year as the place to go, especially as there are some great hotel deals. From the moment the plane skims over the water and lands at Rafic Hariri airport, you feel a buzz that stays with you the whole time.

You can visit at any time of year as there is always something to do. In the summer you can visit one of the many paid private beaches where you can sip a cocktail and mix with the beautiful and trendy crowds that hang out there.

If it gets a tad too hot you can head up in the mountains, to the iconic cedar forests or just to eat in one of the many mountain restaurants which offer respite from the heat. (more...)

If you are looking for a stylish and pretty unusual hotel then some of the Dubai hotels have to be right up there! I have stayed in a couple and visited a few for lunch or dinner and I have to say that out of the hundreds of hotels that I have stayed in over the last twenty years, a Dubai hotel certainly stands out from the rest.

Right at the top has to be the Burj Al Arab, the 6 star hotel which stands out in the sea, shaped like a sail. It is fantastic lit up at night and viewed from afar, but going inside is something special.

Although I could never afford to stay there, I managed a couple of meals and from the moment you walk in you can feel the opulence and glamour from the gilded ceilings and the designer shops. (more...)

If there is one thing that many people love about hotels and Cruises it is the little things that they find in their room, the finishing touches which make a good holiday into a really great holiday, although some people are far more demanding than others are.

Some people are perfectly happy if there are decent toiletries in the room, especially ones by top names which can slip into their suitcases quite easily for the journey home. Others are more impressed by extra facilities such as espresso coffee makers or Jacuzzi baths.

Newly weds are always treated very well and they often arrive to find rose petals strewn around the bed and one romantic trip I went on, the cleaning lady had even put a towel on the bed which she had made into the shape of a white swan – now that is what I call service. (more...)
